How to Answer: Why Are You Applying for a Job Outside of Your Current Industry?

Change is good. Trying to experience new challenges and adventures can be a great way to explore what makes you the happiest. However, if you do not have any previous experience in the job field you are applying for, it is expected that your interviewer might have some questions about your change in direction. Being stuck in the same career path when you are no longer passionate about your work can be a real struggle. Simply building up the confidence to branch out and apply to new jobs outside of your industry should be heavily celebrated! You can feel empowered when explaining your interest in exploring new tasks, working with new people, and achieving new goals. It is crucial to center this conversation around exploration. You can also bring up the term transferable skills. Essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving can be useful in almost any job you apply for.

Example: I have decided to explore outside of my job industry so that I can fulfill my interest in trying to heighten my transferable skills. I am highly confident in my communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, which can be useful in any industry. 

Challenge

Employers love to find applicants who are willing to take on a challenge. If you explain your interest in trying to challenge yourself and try new things, this can be very attractive to your interviewer. Back up your claim with examples of times when you have been faced with a challenge and have come out successful. Your employer will view you as adaptable and motivated, which makes you a highly effective employee.

Explain: I want to apply for this job because I am always up for the challenge. I find my motivation when challenging myself to try new things and dare to succeed. I have had a great experience in my last position when trying new tasks and working with new teams. Collaborating with employees from different departments helped out two departments work more smoothly together.

Interest

If you have dipped your toes into the new industry you are applying for, even for a minute, this is a great talking point to bring up in your interview! Maybe you took a related class in college, have previous internship experience, or shadowed someone in a different department for a day. If you have a taste for the experience and a strong interest in the industry, make it known!

Example: I was able to shadow someone in the Sales department last year at my previous job. It really sparked my interest and so I decided to apply for this job so I could expand my horizons.
