A cover letter is a document you might need to send alongside your resume for a job application. A cover letter is just about 3 paragraphs long and usually includes information such as your professional background, your reason for applying for the job, and why you are the right candidate for the position.

Writing a cover letter that wins isn’t merely about writing good content, correct formatting will also score you some extra points. When talking about formatting a cover letter, we refer to spacing, heading, page margin, font size, font type, document type, and so on. All of these might seem insignificant,  but they contribute to the overall appeal of a cover letter. Here are some general tips you should keep in mind.

Font Style

It is essential to keep your font professional and clean. You can use a classic font like Arial, Calibri, Verdana, or Times New Roman. Do not use a fancy font that may look unprofessional or that is difficult to read.

Page Margins and Spacing

To be on the safe side, it is recommended that you use between 1 to 1.5 inches margin. If you need more space, you can adjust the margin; only ensure that you avoid extreme adjustment so your document is not crowded and unorganized.

Font Size

When selecting the font size, choose a medium size- not too small, not too big. The small font might cause the employer to strain his eyes, while large fonts can be seen as unprofessional. You could use a 12-point font and nothing smaller than a 10-point font.

File Format

It is essential to stick with the file format given by your recruiter. However, if there is no specific format stated, it is advisable to save your document in PDF format. This saves a lot of compatibility problems. A PDF document cannot become disorganized or altered, and it can be easily read by an applicant tracking system (ATS). It is advisable to save the PDF document with a suitable name like “your-name cover letter.pdf”. For example, Jason’s cover letter.pdf.

Your Contact Information

Your cover letter contact information should include the following:

  • Name: should be written in as the center-point of your letter header with larger font-size and bolder text.
  • Address: this includes your city, street address, and zip code.
  • Phone number: write your active phone number. But if the job is in a different city from where you live, include the relevant area codes in your contact number.
  • Email address: this is optional but can be included if you have one.
  • Online profile: this gives your employer the chance to check you out and see what you do. You can include your website link or Linkedln profile.

After writing your information, you move on to writing:

  • Date
  • Employer contact information (if you have it)
  • Hiring manager’s name
  • The company name
  • Company address
  • Company city, state zip code.

When it comes to cover letters, first impression matters. You should be able to pay attention to your detailing and arrangement before submitting the letter.
